Why is it called Roland Garros?
Roland-Garros is the name of a famous tennis tournament held in France. It got its name from a man named Roland Garros, who was a war hero and an aviator. The tournament was opened in 1928 to celebrate the success of French tennis, as the country had just won the Davis Cup.
The president of Stade Francais, Emile Lesueur, suggested naming the venue after his former classmate Roland Garros. Roland Garros was a brave pilot who died during World War I in 1918. The idea was accepted, and ever since then, the tennis tournament has been known as Roland-Garros.

Who was Roland Garros?
Roland Garros, despite being associated with a major tennis event, didn’t have much experience in tennis. As a child, he played rugby and football instead. However, at the age of 21, he developed a passion for airplanes. Just four years later, in 1913, he accomplished what is believed to be the world’s first flight across the Mediterranean.
During World War I, Garros used his love for planes in a unique way. He came up with a revolutionary method of attaching a machine gun to an airplane, which proved to be very effective in combat. Garros had success as a fighter pilot, but in 1915, he was captured and became a prisoner of war.
It took Garros three years to escape, but despite his poor health, he chose to return to the battlefield almost immediately. This decision was not surprising, considering his motto was, “Victory belongs to the most persevering,” which he had inscribed on his planes’ propellers. Sadly, Garros died in battle on October 5, 1918, but his legacy of innovation and determination lives on.
Apart from being honored with the name of the French Open, Roland Garros also has an airport named after him on the French island of Réunion.

Rafael Nadal holds the record for the most French Open titles, having won the tournament 14 times. Out of those 14 wins, five of them were consecutive. Nadal is known for his exceptional skills on clay courts, which are the type of courts used at Roland Garros.
In the women’s singles category, Chris Evert is the most successful player at Roland-Garros, having triumphed there seven times. Evert’s achievements on the clay courts have solidified her reputation as one of the greats in women’s tennis.
